## The clean-sheet Aston that preceded the DB5

Development started in 1956. General manager John Wyer coordinated chassis designer Harold Beach, engine designer Tadek Marek and Touring of Milan; Beach produced the platform needed for Touring's aluminium-over-tube construction.

The DB4 debuted at the 1958 London Motor Show. Aston Martin claimed 0-100-0 mph in under 30 seconds, supported by a 3.7-litre straight-six, four-wheel discs and a quoted 140 mph top speed.

The range evolved through five informal series. A convertible arrived in 1961, Special Series and Vantage engines raised output, and the separate short-wheelbase DB4 GT programme pursued competition use before the DB5 replaced the standard car in 1963.
