The record

Hungarian Porsche racing-engine engineer who, with Hans Mezger, developed the fuel-injected 2.7-litre flat-six for the 911 Carrera RS 2.7.

Born in Hungary on 8 October 1931, Schäffer joined Porsche in 1955 as an engine mechanic. He said he had planned to attend engineering school in Stockach but moved to Tamm near Ludwigsburg. Porsche says he began in the racing department the day after his interview, soon worked on the 547/2 engine for the 550 A Spyder RS, and passed his technician's and master's examinations in 1961.

Porsche's detailed 2021 biography says it appointed Schäffer head of racing engine development in 1966; he worked with Ferdinand Piëch and Hans Mezger. Porsche lists his involvement in the 547/2, 753, 771, 901/20, 901/21, 908, 912 and related 917 turbo engines. Its account also places him at Le Mans on 14 June 1970, when Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood won in a 917 KH.

In 1971, Porsche says Schäffer reassessed the 917 turbo engine and acquired the nickname Turbo-Valentin. Its 2022 Museum account credits him and Hans Mezger with developing the Carrera RS 2.7's fuel-injected flat-six. Porsche's detailed 2021 biography gives 1966 for his appointment and 1989 for retirement; a 2024 Porsche caption instead gives a 1964–1991 head-of-racing-engines tenure.

### Mezger drew, he built

Schäffer summarised his working relationship and friendship with Hans Mezger as "Hans hat gezeichnet, ich hab’ gebaut." The 2021 Porsche Klassik article places the quotation beside its account of their long collaboration on Porsche racing engines.

### Turbo and the test bench

In 1971, Porsche says he reassessed the 917 turbo engine and gained the nickname Turbo-Valentin. He called that turbo engine simple. Separately, Porsche recounts his Sunday test-bench work on the Type 771, not on the turbo.
