The record

British designer credited by Porsche for the production Carrera GT, who worked at Porsche from 1986 to 2020 and was Head of Design Quality Style Porsche from 2014.

Born in Newcastle, England, on 13 December 1954, Hatter studied Transportation Design at Lanchester Polytechnic in Coventry from 1975 to 1979 and Automotive Design at the Royal College of Art in London from 1979 to 1981. Porsche says that watching Steve McQueen’s Le Mans at seventeen motivated him to seek a design role there. He worked at Adam Opel in Rüsselsheim from 1981 to 1986 before joining Porsche.

At Porsche, Hatter was an exterior designer from 1986 to 2002. Porsche’s CV lists the 993, 993 Turbo, 911 GT1 ’96, GT1 ’97 and GT1 ’98 among the cars for which he was responsible as a designer. It also says he recreated shapes in CAD in the mid-1990s; the resulting work led to orders from Porsche racing departments.

From 2002 to 2005 Hatter was Design Manager Customer and Special Projects; from 2005 to 2014 he was Design Manager Sports Cars. In 2014 he became Head of Design Quality Style Porsche, a post he held until retiring in 2020. Porsche’s CV includes the production-model Carrera GT in his design credits, while a 2025 Porsche history article names him its exterior designer.

Porsche’s 2025 Carrera GT history attributes a statement to Hatter and records 1,270 hand-crafted cars built between autumn 2003 and May 2006. Its technical table gives the construction period as 2003 to 2006 and the same total.

### CAD for racing shapes

In the mid-1990s, while modelling was still prevalent, Hatter recreated shapes in CAD. Porsche says this led to orders from its racing departments, where the software saved time validating manual vehicle design.

### Carrera GT credit

Porsche’s 2025 Carrera GT history identifies Hatter as the exterior designer responsible for the car. Its CV separately records the production model in his design credits.

In their words

> “This car is a gift to everyone who wants to know where Porsche came from – and where we want to go. We took motorsport in its purest form – and made it into a road car.”
