The other authorship

Scaglietti’s claim on Ferrari is not the sketch but the panel: coachbuilding, metal finishing, production made real. The register is precise about it — its Tour de France and SWB files separate Pinin Farina’s design from Scaglietti’s construction, and Ferrari’s own GTO history names him as the man who gave that body its final hand-shaped finish.

Modena made him: an apprenticeship at Fabbrica Modenese Carrozzerie in the early thirties, the Torricelli brothers’ body shop, then an independent workshop with Lino Sala and Francesco Marchesi. In 1951 he founded Carrozzeria Scaglietti — and the Ferrari collaboration began the same year. The five files below hold the metal it produced.

The bench

## Wire, hammer, eye

How a body left Modena — the stations of the shop, in the shop’s own words.

### il filo

The wire

In the early years a full-size wire maquette stood where other houses pinned drawings — the body sketched in space, in tube and wire, before any metal was cut.

### la forma

The buck

Tubular bucks gave the panels their reference, for steel or alloy coachwork alike. The buck held the shape; the hammer negotiated with it.

### il martello

The hammer

Aluminium beaten into curvature by hand — and on the GTO, shaped directly over the frame, piece by piece, with nothing between the man and the metal.

### l’occhio

The eye

No drawings. Ferrari’s own GTO history records the body finished by eye — the final judge of a Scaglietti panel was the man looking down its length.

### il peso

The weight

Competition bodies in lightweight aluminium — the TdF berlinettas, the SWB in competition form. Grams surrendered panel by panel, for racing.

### la scala

The scale

Realising Pininfarina’s specifications at production volume, working from the studio’s scale models — construction mastered as a craft of its own, never claimed as styling.

Beyond the register

## From the Mondial to the Boxer

Associations of the carrozzeria, per Ferrari’s own retrospectives and the obituary record — the works’ output, not claims of sole design authorship.

### '53–'57

#### Ferrari 500 Mondial

The commission that started it — Ferrari came after seeing his reconstruction work.

#### Ferrari 750 Monza

Almost all coachwork built by Scaglietti, to Dino Ferrari’s design.

#### Ferrari 375 MM Coupé Speciale

A bespoke body for Roberto Rossellini — the client car as one-off cinema.

#### Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa

Among the major Ferrari bodywork named in the obituary record.

### '62–'68

#### Ferrari 250 GT Lusso

Named among the Scaglietti-bodied classic Ferraris.

#### Ferrari 275 GTB

Ferrari’s own retrospective counts the 275 among his landmark work.

#### Ferrari 365 GTB/4 “Daytona”

The register records Scaglietti coachwork — the carrozzeria at full production scale.

### '69–'73

#### Dino 246 GT

Named among the classic Ferrari bodywork associated with the works.

#### Ferrari 365 GT4 BB

Period evidence says “by Scaglietti” — the company association in its final form.

The house

Carrozzeria Scaglietti

Founded in Modena in 1951 — the year the Ferrari collaboration began. Ferrari’s own record disagrees on when it bought the works: its magazine says 1973, its stock-market filing 1977. Either way, Scaglietti stayed on as director until 1985, then advised for roughly another decade — the shop and the man inseparable to the end.

Founder · Modena, 1951

In his words

“I worked for racing, for speed, but also for beauty.”
