Pininfarina designer associated with the Ferrari F40

The record

Italian designer whose career included Pininfarina Studi e Ricerche during the F40 era; independent reporting identifies him as the F40’s designer within Pininfarina. In a 2022 interview, he described the assignment as a constrained restyling under Aldo Brovarone.

Pietro Camardella studied at a Liceo Artistico and architecture at the University of Naples. A Biennale Tecnologia biography places him at Bauen Studio in Salerno from 1980 to 1984, working on building and interior design. In a 2020 interview he said that a 1984 sector downturn prompted an application to Pininfarina, where a lengthy selection process ended in his hiring.

Biennale Tecnologia records him at Pininfarina Studi e Ricerche from 1985 and says he worked on the F40, the 512 TR, the F50, the 456 GT and the Mythos concept. In the 2020 interview, Camardella said that, after he became operational in Pininfarina’s styling office, his first job was a Ferrari and that he drew the F40 a year later.

In a 2022 Speed no Limits interview, Camardella called the F40 assignment a “rogna,” a partial restyling constrained by the existing cabin cell and doors, and said it was assigned to him under Aldo Brovarone during a staffing shortage. He also described tracing the nose’s plan on the studio floor and working with modellers on the model. The F40 was presented on 21 July 1987.

### Restyling within an existing cell

In 2022, Camardella described the F40 as a job initially treated as little more than a restyling, constrained by the existing cabin cell and doors and assigned to him under Aldo Brovarone.

### Hands-on model work

He described tracing the nose’s plan on the studio floor and, with the modellers, changing lines and surfaces on the model.
