The other hand

He joined Sant’Agata in 1963 as Gian Paolo Dallara’s assistant and ran the technical side by 1968 — general manager and technical director through Lamborghini’s defining decade. The Miura and the Countach carry Bertone’s lines; underneath, they carry his arithmetic.

His work was collaborative engineering and production integration, not styling: turning Lamborghini’s first V12 into a usable road-car engine, packaging the Miura with Dallara and Wallace, resolving the Countach for production. The drawings that matter here are the ones with dimensions on them. The lines themselves have their own file — [Marcello Gandini](https://hiconium.dev/people/marcello-gandini).

Stanzani’s early remit — structural calculations, engine and road testing, homologation — sat between Bizzarrini’s engine concept, Dallara’s chassis and Touring’s body, making the competition engine tractable and producible. The most beautiful body of the decade was drawn around a mechanical layout that already existed. Open the file](https://hiconium.dev/vehicles/lamborghini/miura)

Stanzani led the mechanical side separately from the styling: the V12 turned lengthways, the gearbox brought forward between the seats, a tubular frame carrying the skin. The layout held for sixteen years. Open the file](https://hiconium.dev/vehicles/lamborghini/countach)

## Drawn at Bertone, solved in Sant’Agata

Signature solutions

## The V12, the package, the frame

### The road-going V12

Bizzarrini’s 3.5-litre V12 was a competition engine. The refinements that made it drivable — and delivered 270 CV in the 350 GT — carried Stanzani’s calculations.

### The transverse package

Miura: engine, gearbox and chassis developed as one compact unit with Dallara and Wallace. Styling followed the mechanical envelope, not the other way round.

### The longitudinal solution

Countach: the V12 turned lengthways, the gearbox ahead of it between the seats, a tubular frame around both. The layout gave the wedge its stance.

### The homologation desk

Structural calculations, engine and road testing, homologation, and the daily liaison with Touring, Bertone, Marazzi and Zagato. The unglamorous half of every launch.

Beyond the register

## From the Espada to the EB110

### '68–'74

#### Lamborghini Espada

Four full seats over the same V12 — the engineering partnership with Bertone, credited to Stanzani.

#### Lamborghini Islero

The quiet grand tourer of his early testing-and-coachbuilder years.

#### Lamborghini Jarama

Entered production under his technical directorship.

#### Lamborghini Urraco

The junior Lamborghini, developed by Stanzani around a new 2.5-litre V8.

#### Lamborghini Bravo concept

His documented request: glass surfaces flush with the body. Bertone obliged.

### '87–'94

#### Bugatti EB110, early project

As Bugatti Automobili’s sole director he set the early engine, chassis and first-bodywork programme; the production car was finished after his 1990 exit.

#### Formula One

Scuderia Italia/Dallara in 1991, Minardi from 1994 — programme leadership, not chassis authorship.

In his words

“Dopo Lamborghini non ho più lavorato come dipendente, perché era impossibile trovare un altro imprenditore così.”

After Lamborghini he never worked as an employee again — another entrepreneur like Ferruccio, he said, was impossible to find.
