He studied aerospace engineering at the University of Stuttgart and worked in the US aerospace sector before returning to Germany to join Daimler in 1997, telling WhichCar he wanted to build cars. Daimler’s 2020 announcement says his earlier work included driver-assistance and steering systems. It also records his first Mercedes-AMG post: Head of Overall Vehicle Development from 2014 to 2016. At the September 2014 launch of the first Mercedes-AMG GT, AMG identified him as Head of Overall Vehicle Engineering and quoted him on the car’s combination of selectively variable mounts and a transaxle drivetrain. That Affalterbach posting is the only AMG complete-vehicle job Daimler later listed before he moved to e-drive. From 2016 to 2020 Hermann was Head of E-drive Development at Daimler, a job the company described as work on electric-drive systems and battery research. He later told WhichCar the role included the modular electric architecture and the EQS. Daimler appointed him Mercedes-AMG’s Chief Technical Officer and a Board member effective 1 August 2020; a 2022 Mercedes-Benz release identified him as Technical Managing Director. Mercedes-Benz presented the production Mercedes-AMG ONE on 1 June 2022 and said it had passed all ECE certification tests. Hermann, then Technical Managing Director, called exhaust-gas aftertreatment the “monumental task” and contrasted an F1 car’s laptop-supported start with a button press in the road car. Mercedes-Benz later stated that 275 customer vehicles would be built. Project ONE had been shown in 2017, before his return as CTO. MB Passion reported in April 2024 that Hermann had left the AMG CTO post and that his LinkedIn listed him as freelance from May 2024. Doftek announced on 7 April 2025 that it had appointed him to its Advisory Board; he said that as AMG CTO he had asked his team to look at active wheel alignment. A November 2025 Doftek release still referred to the appointment. The reviewed sources do not establish the appointment’s end date or verify that it continued on 16 August 2026. ### Button-start F1 hybrid At the 2022 AMG ONE premiere, Hermann said the laptop-assisted Formula 1 start had become a button press in the road car, and that this illustrated the software work in the vehicle. ### Exhaust-gas aftertreatment At the same premiere he called exhaust-gas aftertreatment the “monumental task,” crediting the Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains teams with making the Formula 1 hybrid meet road emissions rules. ### Transaxle and variable mounts On the first Mercedes-AMG GT in 2014, while Head of Overall Vehicle Engineering, he singled out the combination of selectively variable mounts and a transaxle drivetrain as unique to that car.
