# Jack Phillips

Head of engine design at Crewe, 1954–1971

The record

Head of engine design at Crewe who worked in Charles Jenner's B-series team and headed the original team behind the L410 V8 introduced in the Bentley S2 in 1959.

Phillips worked in Charles Jenner's B-series engine team at Crewe. Early in 1954, shortly after becoming head of engine design, he was called by Harry Grylls. The mandate was an engine with about 50 per cent more power and torque than the 4.9-litre six, no greater weight or cost, and the same radiator frontal area. Phillips said he had known Grylls since the early 1930s.

He established a core team of Harry Bamford, Fritz Feller, Les Robinson and Reg Spencer. The first experimental L380 used a 3.8 by 3.5-inch bore and stroke for 5.2 litres and wide heads with vee-inclined valves. A wide-head prototype was fitted to an S1 in May 1955. The engine was too heavy and wide for production cars, and the team adopted a narrower wedge-chamber head.

The L410 production version had a 4.10 by 3.60-inch bore and stroke and 6,230cc capacity. It entered the 1959 Bentley S2 and Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II, weighing 30lb less than the six it replaced. The engine combined a high-silicon LM8 aluminium block, top-hung wet liners, a deep-skirt crankcase and hydraulic tappets. Phillips bought initial tappet sets from Chicago Screw after US trials.

### The brief

Grylls asked Phillips for around 50 per cent more power and torque with no increase in weight and as little increase in cost as possible. Phillips's further account adds the same radiator frontal area. The original team progressed from the L380 experiments to the 6,230cc L410.

### Hydraulic tappets

Phillips said the design changed from solid to hydraulic tappets. He visited the United States and ordered sets from Chicago Screw; the first 500 production tappets came from that supplier in late 1958.

### Aluminium and clearance

High-silicon LM8 aluminium, wet liners hung from their tops, a deep crankcase skirt and waisted studs followed Crewe aero design standards. The 4.65-inch bore centres allowed later capacity increases; long-stroke and turbo variants followed the original team's work.
