The through-line

Alfieri’s work is the conversion of competition thinking into cars that could be sold, driven far and serviced: race-derived engines made tractable, a monarch’s one-off request answered with a complete engineering programme, radical layouts that never forgot the luggage. Seven Maserati files in the register carry his name — more than any other hand in it.

He came to Modena from steam turbines and Lambrettas, joined the 250F programme in 1953, and ran Maserati’s engineering for over two decades — through the racing withdrawal, the grand-touring years and the Citroën era. Structure, packaging and mechanical coherence took priority over any personal styling signature; the stylists changed, the engineering line never broke.

## Seven files on one line

Every file below is a station on the same development chain — engines, chassis and packaging handed forward from car to car for twenty-two years.

1. [![Maserati 250F staged in a darkened scene](https://hiconium.dev/_derived/images/cars/maserati-250f/hero-wide-2560.jpg.w1920.q75.webp) 1954 ### Maserati 250F Chief development engineer · Maserati He joined the 250F programme in 1953 and inherited its continuing chassis and mechanical development after Vittorio Bellentani left. The grand-prix Maserati stayed current for six seasons because somebody kept redrawing it — Doug Nye names Alfieri as that somebody. Open the file](https://hiconium.dev/vehicles/maserati/250f)
2. [![Maserati 3500 GT staged in a darkened scene](https://hiconium.dev/_derived/images/cars/maserati-3500-gt/hero-wide-2560.jpg.w1920.q75.webp) 1957 ### Maserati 3500 GT Chief engineer · Maserati The 350S racing six, civilised: a wet sump, purchased-in components, twin-cam character kept but made tractable at low speed. Maserati credits him with its first series-produced grand tourer — the car that turned a racing shop into a manufacturer. Open the file](https://hiconium.dev/vehicles/maserati/3500-gt)
3. [![Maserati 5000 GT staged in a darkened scene](https://hiconium.dev/_derived/images/cars/maserati-5000-gt/hero-wide-2560.jpg.w1920.q75.webp) 1959 ### Maserati 5000 GT Technical director · Maserati The Shah of Persia asked for the 450S V8 in a road car. Alfieri refused the transplant and delivered a programme — the AM103 engine with revised chassis, braking and driveline — that eight coachbuilders would go on to clothe. Open the file](https://hiconium.dev/vehicles/maserati/5000-gt)
4. [![Maserati Ghibli staged in a darkened scene](https://hiconium.dev/_derived/images/cars/maserati-ghibli/hero-wide-2560.jpg.w1920.q75.webp) 1967 ### Maserati Ghibli Chief engineer · Maserati Giugiaro drew a bonnet too low for a quad-cam V8. Alfieri’s answer was a dry sump — the engine lowered until the line could stand. The stylist set the proportion; the engineer made it true. Open the file](https://hiconium.dev/vehicles/maserati/ghibli)
5. [![Maserati Bora staged in a darkened scene](https://hiconium.dev/_derived/images/cars/maserati-bora/hero-wide-2560.jpg.w1920.q75.webp) 1971 ### Maserati Bora Chief engineer · Maserati Monocoque, rear subframe, fully independent suspension around a longitudinal mid-mounted V8 — and still a front luggage compartment, because a Maserati went places. The house names the Bora as his engineering design. Open the file](https://hiconium.dev/vehicles/maserati/bora)
6. [![Maserati Merak staged in a darkened scene](https://hiconium.dev/_derived/images/cars/maserati-merak/hero-wide-2560.jpg.w1920.q75.webp) 1972 ### Maserati Merak Chief engineer · Maserati His Citroën-developed V6 family set into the Bora-derived mid-engine package. The shorter engine bought back cabin length — room for two occasional seats where the Bora carried its V8. Open the file](https://hiconium.dev/vehicles/maserati/merak)
7. [![Maserati Khamsin staged in a darkened scene](https://hiconium.dev/_derived/images/cars/maserati-khamsin/hero-wide-2560.jpg.w1920.q75.webp) 1974 ### Maserati Khamsin Engineering director · Maserati The final Maserati programme: the 4.9-litre V8 retained, the Ghibli formula retired — unitary body, rear subframe, independent rear suspension. Gandini drew the wedge; Alfieri built the car underneath it. Open the file](https://hiconium.dev/vehicles/maserati/khamsin)

Engineering moves

## The wet sump, the lattice, the cant

### The wet sump

Race hardware made road-serviceable: the 3500 GT and 5000 GT rework racing engines and their supporting systems for the road, never merely detune them.

### The lattice

The Birdcage’s roughly two hundred triangulated tubes put stiffness only where the loads asked for it. Structural economy as a signature.

### The canted engine

Package the mechanicals to the proportion: the Birdcage engine leaned over for a lower centre of gravity, the Ghibli V8 dry-sumped under Giugiaro’s bonnet, the Bora’s V8 set aft with the luggage kept.

### The whole-car system

Citroën hydraulics on the Bora and Khamsin were not a brake circuit but an architecture — controls, accommodation and serviceability engineered as one.

### The next material

At Lamborghini he initiated the Countach Evoluzione composite programme — carbon fibre applied to serious weight reduction, years before it was orthodoxy.

The archive

## Prints from the drawer

Period photographs from the works, the Nürburgring, Modena and Turin — choose a print and it pushes the others aside.

Beyond the register

## The Birdcage, the V6, the carbon Countach

### Maserati Tipo 60/61 Birdcage

The two-hundred-tube frame and the canted engine — competition structure at its most economical.

### Citroën V6

The engine family developed under Citroën ownership; it powered the SM and returned home in the Merak.

### Innocenti Lambretta

Centro Studi work in Milan — scooter development before the trident.

### Lamborghini Countach Evoluzione

The composite Countach — his late-career argument that the next advantage was material.
