The record

Italian architect who designed Bugatti Automobili’s Campogalliano factory and finished the EB110’s design after Marcello Gandini’s initial proposals.

Born on 5 June 1945 in Quinzano d’Oglio, Benedini graduated in architecture from the Politecnico di Milano. By 1973 he was practising as an architect and was an initial partner in Agape. He served as its CEO until 1990 and art director until 2000, and Agape credits him with its principal products and offices. The company’s own account says Emanuele succeeded him as CEO in 1990.

Romano Artioli acquired the Bugatti name rights in 1987 and gave the architectural commission for the Campogalliano works to his cousin Benedini. After three years of construction, the factory opened on 15 September 1990. Its light-filled, radiused halls used Bugatti blue and blossom white; in the glazed development building, blinds adjusted to daylight. Benedini later became Bugatti Automobili’s vice-president responsible for styling.

Artioli asked Benedini to modify the initial EB110 design after proposals by Marcello Gandini did not receive his approval. Bugatti says Benedini smoothed the sharp edges and extreme wedge shape. The EB110 was introduced in Paris on 15 September 1991. Achim Anscheidt, then Bugatti Design Director, describes Benedini as the final designer responsible for the last EB110 designs; another Bugatti release says its design was finished by him.

### Smoothing the extreme wedge

Bugatti records that he modified the initial EB110 design by smoothing its sharp edges and extreme wedge shape.

### Radiused factory halls

At Campogalliano he designed light-filled halls with radiused corners, Bugatti blue and blossom-white walls, and a glazed development building whose blinds adjusted to daylight.
