He headed Stylistics from the mid-1950s until he retired at the end of 1973. Born in Süßen on 24 November 1907, Friedrich Geiger trained as a cartwright before studying design engineering. Mercedes-Benz’s archive records that he joined the Sindelfingen special-vehicle unit, led by Hermann Ahrens, in April 1933. The unit produced one-off passenger cars. A 2024 Mercedes-Benz Museum release names him as the stylist of the 500 K Special Roadster body, with its large, elegantly curved wings and long bonnet. Geiger left Daimler-Benz in April 1948 and returned in June 1950 as a test engineer in Styling. Mercedes-Benz identifies him as head of Stylistics from the mid-1950s, working under Karl Wilfert’s body-development organisation at Sindelfingen. Paul Bracq was the department’s first dedicated automobile designer and Bruno Sacco its second, hired in 1958. The Mercedes-Benz archive names Geiger chief stylist of the production 300 SL (W 198). After Max Hoffman persuaded the board in September 1953 to put the W 194 racing car into production, Geiger developed its body through extensive refinement. The tall tubular frame made gullwing doors necessary. The car debuted in New York in February 1954, with a horizontal star intake replacing the vertical grille. Mercedes-Benz press material on the 230 SL (W 113) says the body was created under his leadership and captions a 13 February 1960 styling sketch as his. The company archive captions a 15 January 1963 sketch of the W 114/115 mid-series as Geiger’s. Anniversary accounts drawn from Mercedes-Benz Classic material also credit him with the W 110 and W 111/112 Fintails and the 600 (W 100). Those accounts also list the R 107 SL, the W 108/109 and W 116 luxury cars and the mid-size W 123 among series created while he headed Stylistics. He retired on 31 December 1973. Sacco succeeded him as head of Stylistics in 1975. Geiger died in Bad Überkingen on 13 June 1996, aged 88. ### Race body, road package Mercedes-Benz credits chief stylist Friedrich Geiger with developing the W 198 production body from the W 194 racing car through extensive refinement. The tubular frame was too high in the entry area for conventional doors, making gullwing doors necessary. ### Horizontal star intake The Mercedes-Benz archive records the 300 SL as the first Mercedes-Benz road car without a vertical radiator grille. A horizontal air intake with the three-pointed star at its centre replaced it. ### Curved wings, long bonnet A 2024 Mercedes-Benz Museum release names Geiger as the stylist of the 500 K Special Roadster’s body: large, elegantly curved wings and a long bonnet. The Special Roadster with recessed radiator joined the W 29 range in October 1934 as its most expensive factory body.
