After Alfa Romeo and a year at Audi he led the Sant'Agata studio from 2006, then headed design at Italdesign and Genesis's European advanced studio. In 2022 he joined AEHRA as chief design officer. Perini was born in Piacenza in 1965 and grew up in nearby Bobbio, where a light-blue Miura set him drawing. At thirteen Gente e Motori printed his sketches. He took a mechanical-engineering degree and a master's in automobile design at the Politecnico di Milano, began at Alfa Romeo in 1993, and joined its Centro Stile in 1995. In 2001 he became director of exterior design for the 159 and the 8C Competizione concept. In 2003 he moved to Audi as a senior exterior designer. The following year he returned to Italy as Head of Exterior Design at Lamborghini, helping to establish the new Centro Stile in Sant'Agata Bolognese. His first work included the Miura Concept, drawn with Walter de Silva, and the Murciélago LP 640. In 2006 he became Director of Centro Stile. He has described those cars as the work of the studio rather than of one person. The register credits him as Head of design for the Aventador. In presenting the car he linked its rear-longitudinal layout to a process in which aesthetics served performance, cooling and mechanical packaging: the masses sat inside the wheelbase, allowing a single line from nose to tail. He said a Centro Stile of four designers used hexagonal elements as a homogeneous grammar and took stealth-jet forms as a source. As Director of Centro Stile he oversaw the Veneno, the 2013 fiftieth-anniversary few-off. He said the brief was maximum downforce on the Aventador platform, and that the board wanted three cars free of series constraints. He contrasted the Veneno's divided, skeletal body with the Aventador's stretched surfaces, and treated the car as a materials experiment with forged composites. In September 2015 Italdesign appointed him Head of Design; Mitja Borkert succeeded him at Lamborghini in 2016. He left Italdesign in September 2019 to lead Genesis's Advanced Design Studio in Rüsselsheim with Luc Donckerwolke. In 2022 AEHRA named him chief design officer; he presented its sedan in Milan in June 2023. ### Technical layout as a design starting point Perini explained that the Aventador's rear-longitudinal engine position concentrated its masses within the wheelbase and supported its proportions. He said aesthetic solutions should serve functional and performance needs, including cooling and mechanical layout. ### Studio authorship Perini has said that the Lamborghini designs on which he worked were products of Centro Stile, rather than the work of one person. On the Aventador he named a studio of four designers. ### Hexagon as a working unit On the Aventador he treated the hexagon as a problem-solving unit. He said there were roughly a thousand hexagonal shapes in the car — rims, switches, engine bay — and told a stuck colleague to try a hexagonal part.
