Bentley Director of Design, 2021-23, who led the Mulliner Batur

The record

German designer who, as Bentley's Director of Design from 2021 to 2023, led the Mulliner Batur, the 18-off coupé that introduced the marque's new form language.

He was born in Bingen am Rhein in 1969 and joined the Volkswagen Group in 1996 after graduating from the Pforzheim University School of Design. In 1999 he designed the exterior of the Bentley Hunaudières concept, shown that year at the Geneva Motor Show. He remained with Volkswagen in Wolfsburg through 2014, working on the first-generation Tiguan and on the exterior of the Golf 7.

In 2014 he moved to Audi as Head of Exterior Design. Over the next seven years he oversaw the exterior realignment of the range, from the Audi A1 to the Audi e-tron GT and from the Audi Q3 to the Audi Q8, and was responsible for the launch of the e-tron, Audi's first fully electric production car.

On 1 March 2021 he became Director of Design at Bentley in Crewe, succeeding Stefan Sielaff. He led a team of about 50 designers covering exterior, interior, colour and trim, concept and show cars, and reported to Matthias Rabe, the board member for engineering. He was tasked with defining Bentley's new design language.

The Mulliner Batur, an 18-off two-door coupé, was unveiled at Monterey Car Week on 21 August 2022. Bentley named the design the work of Mindt and his team, including Head of Exterior Design Tobias Suehlmann and Head of Interior Design Andrew Hart-Barron, and the first showing of a new design DNA for the marque's battery-electric cars. He left Crewe on 1 February 2023 to head Volkswagen Brand Design; from 1 March 2026 he also leads Volkswagen Group Design.

### Resting beast stance

He described the Batur's stance as a lion or tiger low in the grass: muscular form at rest, which he used to reinterpret Bentley's power line and haunch.

### Endless bonnet line

On the Batur he ran a single highlight from the bonnet along the body, the only accent on an otherwise cleaner volume, and shifted visual mass onto the rear axle.
