Born in Madrid on 5 February 1968, he trained in industrial design at Elisava in Barcelona and took a master's in automotive design at the Royal College of Art in London. From 1994 to 2001 he worked on exterior design for SEAT, Volkswagen, Audi and Lamborghini at the Volkswagen Group's Design Center Europe. In 2001 he moved to Renault, directing design projects in Barcelona and Paris and, from 2007 to 2009, the Advanced Design department. In 2009 Renault appointed him Design Director of Renault Samsung Motors in South Korea. On 1 August 2011 he succeeded Luc Donckerwolke as SEAT Design Director. Manufacturer statements later credited him with the Ateca, Arona and Tarraco, the fifth-generation Ibiza, later Leon models and the CUPRA Formentor. In 2018 Automotive News Europe gave him its Eurostars award for the renewal of the SEAT range. He joined Groupe Renault's design team on 1 October 2020, reporting to Laurens van den Acker, and headed design at Dacia. He left that Dacia post in April 2021. On 22 June 2021 Alfa Romeo named him Head of Design, to start on 1 July. He then reported to Jean-Pierre Ploué. He still holds the post at the Alfa Romeo Centro Stile. The 33 Stradale (2024) was developed under his direction. Alfa Romeo unveiled it on 30 August 2023 as a 33-car fuoriserie, built by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera with a twin-turbo V6 or a battery-electric option. Neue Zürcher Zeitung named César Barreau for the exterior and Ivan Garcia for the interior. He told Car and Driver España that the 2022 idea with CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato went ahead once more than twenty clients had placed deposits. ### Few lines, not a retro exercise At the Arese launch Auto&Design quoted him calling the 33 Stradale “a real manifesto of ‘essential beauty’: a few lines, sensual and at the same time powerful.” He later told the same magazine the studio had to “innovate, not emulate.” Neue Zürcher Zeitung recorded that refusal of a pure retro exercise from Mesonero, Barreau and Garcia together. ### Client-funded limited series He told Car and Driver España that the 33 Stradale began as a 2022 conversation with Jean-Philippe Imparato and proceeded after more than twenty clients had placed deposits, with construction at Touring Superleggera.
