# The masthead

The Journal is written by people with standing subjects, not by a content calendar. A byline here is a beat held for years — and unsigned pieces carry the house's own name.

How this page is kept

A writer appears on the masthead once they hold a subject rather than an assignment: a marque, a period, a question the register keeps returning to. Each entry names that beat and lists the pieces published under it, so a reader can weigh an argument against the body of work behind it rather than against a byline alone.

Pieces that carry no byline are the house's own — market notes, corrections and the ledger's running commentary, written collectively and edited to one voice. They are not anonymous by accident; they are the register speaking rather than a person, and they are held to the same sourcing rule as everything else.
