The modern Mille Miglia is a regularity rally, but nobody drives it slowly: it remains the most demanding week a pre-1958 car can be asked to survive. Completion matters. The origin 1927 Giovanni Canestrini, Franco Mazzotti, Aymo Maggi and Renzo Castagneto created the Mille Miglia. On 2 December 1926, Mazzotti, Maggi and Castagneto visited Canestrini at his Milan home to propose the Coppa della Mille Miglia; the first speed race began in Brescia on 26 March 1927. The original road race ran for 24 editions through 1957. A historical re-enactment followed in 1977, became biennial in 1984 and 1986, and annual from 1987. The modern event is organised by 1000 Miglia Srl, a wholly owned subsidiary of Automobile Club Brescia. How it runs | Label | Value | | --- | --- | | Who may start | Cars built from 1927 to 1957 must be models entered in the 1927–1957 speed race and carry a Registro 1000 Miglia certificate. Pre-1927 examples are admitted only if their model was entered in that period; cars after 1957 are refused. In 2026, 405 cars could be accepted, including up to 30 on the Special List. | | Five days, five legs | The 2026 re-enactment ran Brescia–Padua–Montecatini Terme–Rome–Rimini–Brescia from 9 to 13 June. The first car left Viale Venezia; the field later returned to Brescia for the required Viale Venezia ramp passage. It used public roads, maximum averages of 50 km/h, and a three-cars-per-minute start. | | Timed regularity | Classification combines 144 Time Trials, eight Average Trials, 23 Time Controls and Passage Controls. Time Trials are measured to one hundredth of a second; Average Trials use GPS at undisclosed points, recorded to the second. Vehicle coefficients reflect design and construction period. The crew with the highest points total wins. | | Related events | Ferrari Tribute 1000 Miglia and the 1000 Miglia Gran Turismo Experience were separate 2026 events in the same week. The main event had its own overall, group and special classifications. It is a classic regularity race: results derive from prescribed timing and scores, not outright speed. | On the record 1. 1927 On 26–27 March 1927, Nando Minoja and Giuseppe Morandi won the inaugural Mille Miglia Cup in an OM 665 Superba. They reached Viale Venezia in 21 hours 4 minutes 48 seconds, at 77.238 km/h. Seventy-seven Italian cars started; fifty-one finished. 2. 1930 In 1930, Tazio Nuvolari and Battista Guidotti won in an Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS. Their 16 hours 18 minutes 59 seconds equalled an official average of 100.45 km/h. 3. 1948 In 1948, Clemente Biondetti and Giuseppe Navone took Ferrari’s first Mille Miglia win in an Allemano-bodied 166 Berlinetta, recorded in 15 hours 5 minutes 44 seconds. The 166 MM took its name from that victory. 4. 1955 Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson won the 1955 Mille Miglia in Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR number 722, finishing in 10 hours 7 minutes 48 seconds. Juan Manuel Fangio was second in another 300 SLR; the time remains the race record. 5. 1957 In 1957, Piero Taruffi won the final speed edition in a Ferrari 315 S in 10 hours 27 minutes 47 seconds. Alfonso de Portago and Edmund Nelson died after their Ferrari 335 S crashed near Mantua; spectators were also killed.
