It is the only round of the historic year run entirely in costume — and the hardest historic racing on the calendar. Revival grids are provenance in motion. The origin 1998 Charles Gordon-Lennox, then Earl of March, opened the first Goodwood Revival on 18 September 1998 at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex. It brought racing back to a circuit based on RAF Westhampnett’s perimeter road, established by his grandfather Freddie March, the 9th Duke of Richmond, and opened to the public in 1948. Contemporary racing ended in August 1966; the Revival returned to the circuit’s original form and its 1948–66 historical context. It is a two-driver, one-hour race for closed-cockpit GT and selected prototype cars in the spirit of the RAC Tourist Trophy races held at Goodwood from 1960 to 1964. Its exact 2026 start time remains unannounced. | | St Mary’s Trophy | The St Mary’s Trophy is named after the church at Lavant. It alternates by year between 1950s and 1960s machinery; 2026 uses production-based saloon cars of 1960–66. Owner and professional-driver legs are combined, and the 2026 edition has two 25-minute races. | | Named period races | The 2026 race card includes Richmond & Gordon Trophies for 2.5-litre Grand Prix cars from 1952–60; Glover Trophy for 1.5-litre Grand Prix cars from 1961–65; Whitsun Trophy for two-driver prototypes from 1960–66; and the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy, a two-rider contest decided across two races. | On the record 1. 1998 On 18 September 1998, the Earl of March opened the first Revival in the Bristol 400 used at the circuit’s 1948 opening. Ray Hanna then flew a Spitfire down the pit straight below the grandstands. 2. 1998 Robert Brooks won the inaugural Sussex Trophy in the Lotus 15 once raced by Graham Hill. The Lotus was damaged in a start-line clash with Frank Sytner’s Lister-Jaguar; Brooks ignored the black-and-orange flag and the result stood. 3. 2005 Goodwood’s winners table records Emanuele Pirro and Dario Franchitti as 2005 RAC TT Celebration winners in a Jaguar E-type Lightweight. 4. 2012 Adrian Newey spun at St Mary’s on the first lap of the 2012 RAC TT Celebration, returned from last to fifth, then handed the Jaguar E-type Lightweight to Martin Brundle. They won by 29 seconds. 5. 2015 All six original Shelby Daytona Coupes were at the 2015 Goodwood Revival. Goodwood’s later archive captions two photographs of the six cars at that meeting.
